TMT – Goal Setting Techniques

The very first thing we must realize, understand and accept is that, when it comes to setting goals for success…Everything Counts.

When you’re on a road trip to visit a friend who recently moved 400 miles away, you don’t just get in the car, turning on any random road you come across or stopping in random towns along the way and hope that somehow you’ll end up at their front door. Of course not! You get in your vehicle, turn on your GPS or pull out your old-school road map, and follow the directions. You’ve got a mission and you’ve taken the correct action to get there via the fastest route possible. And, if you do want to wander around in quaint little towns, you’ve likely scheduled time to do so.

ThinkThink for a minute: Isn’t it ironic just how many hours we put into planning short trips, week-long family vacations and month-long business trips that take us around the globe? But how we spend virtually no time mapping out our future and creating goals that, once achieved, will get us to the place where we want to be. Yogi Berra said it best when he said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else.” How many people have you heard say that they had inspirational dreams of being a teacher, an executive or a business owner, but as is often the case, “life got in the way” and things just never panned out.

But you don’t have time to just sit back and let things happen; you have places to go, people to meet and dreams to fulfill. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich said, “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” In order to live the life you’re dreaming of, your goals will be your GPS that will get you to your desired destination.

Chances for success

One of the most useful Goal Setting Techniques is to use the acronym SMART to formulate goals which are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Time Sensitive

An example would be: I am going to start a pet grooming service and be earning $1000 a month by the end of 12 months. Or, I will lose twenty pounds, by my next birthday by eating a 1500 calorie diet and walking for 60 minutes every night.

Each of these goals is specific to you and only includes one end result: starting a small business or losing weight. Both will be able to be measured since you’ve set parameters (which are realistic) and if you follow through, you should be able to achieve them by your self-imposed deadline.
